Greetings Friends!
After having served almost two terms on the Board of Education, I am seeking your support to be elected to the Oakland City Council as a representative of District 3. My experiences have prepared me to serve you well.
As a resident of West Oakland since 1982, I have seen and heard a lot. My involvement in the many communities we call Oakland, has provided many opportunities to listen to our stories—some good, some not so good. I’ve been fortunate to partner with some of the best leaders in our community helping to uplift our youth. My leadership has been guided in part by a belief that the best of whom we are, and what we can do, has yet to be seen!
It is an exciting time to be living in our Community. I believe that we have the capacity to create a vibrant economy. One that can truly serve all of our residents by employing a balanced approach to development, educating our children for the 21st century and creating stronger, safer neighborhoods.
We are on the threshold of an exciting change in the national political landscape. Much of this can be credited to the emergence of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton as presidential hopefuls. Equally, we can take pride in the community leaders here in Oakland, many of whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with directly. This experience has empowered much of the plan I have developed for District 3.
The need for cleaner, sustainable and renewable resources is a common public conversation. The promise of a Green Economy is on the horizon, and the vision and plan I have for District 3 will ensure we are the beneficiaries in what is forthcoming.
The possibility of Oakland’s seasoned leadership working in concert with an energized and emergent young and diverse political crowd is coming into focus. And this focus will without a doubt encourage us Oakland residents to be our best selves. We have talent. We have pride, and we have many families, professionals and students interested in being engaged.
While we have lots to be optimistic about, there are still challenges. Some of these challenges we can see, and some that we have yet to experience. Our system of schooling is failing too many youth. Our streets are not as safe as they could and should be. Our civic fabric is frayed. As a community, our inability and/or unwillingness to let go of antiquated views, and worn out ways of doing things is costing us too much. How much more should we lose before we agree that we need more than just change in the buildings, we need change in Oakland’s leadership?
These are challenges. Turning these challenges into opportunities has been the focus of my work for over 30 years. These opportunities for change are not moments we should have to wait many years to see. Success, mobility, quality education, accountability and growing opportunities are all benefits of a change we can encourage now.
We not only need change.
We need a Change that builds on our strengths and assets. We have many.
We need a Change that will create better days for our children. They are depending on us.
We need a Change that we can all be a part, not only as neighbors, but active members.
We need a Change that defines leadership as involvement, and demands transparency.
We need a Change now!
And most of all, we need you.
I want to know what you think about Oakland. I want to know what you think will make West Oakland, Adams Point, Jack London Square and all the parts of this district even better to live in than it is.
Talk with me.
I will listen. I will lift. I will lead.
I have for many years, and will continue.
Many of you know me not only by my name, but also by my works.
Today, tomorrow, next week and in particular, on June 3rd, I am asking for your support. Please get involved in my campaign: volunteer, make a donation, forward this note to your friends or call me to talk about what you would like to do!
See you soon,
Greg Hodge
